Since I started boxing training a year or so ago, I have become fascinated with the history of the sport in America and the cast of interesting characters who have inhabited it.
The streets of New York City used to become totally deserted during a major bout, every family glued to their radio who couldn’t make it to the Garden. Through the years, in a story that has a lot of parallels to the greed, short-term thinking, and exploitation of artists that has demolished the music industry, boxing went from the center of American life to the fringes.
Tomorrow it returns to network television. Should be interesting to see if America still has a place for it, especially in this age of MMA. It’s a bit like trying to teach a culture raised on Internet porn to appreciate an erotic striptease.
